Orlando, FLA – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (7-3-1-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, pulled off an improbable comeback this morning in Orlando Florida to take the second win of the week against the Orlando Solar Bears (2-5-2-0). Greenville trailed by three goals at the halfway point of the second period, but turned in a 4-3 victory in overtime against their South Division counterparts. Greenville has won six straight games dating back to Oct. 28 and are 2-0-0-0 in morning games this season.
Trailing 3-0 in the second period, Dawson Leedahl gave Greenville a push in the right direction. The rookie forward was the recipient of a pair of quick passes from Caleb Herbert and Brandon Troock on the power play. The first attempt from Leedahl was denied by goaltender Cal Heeter, but he stuck with it on the side of the net to record his third goal of the season at 13:05. The Swamp Rabbits would score all of their goals in regulation while on the man advantage, ending the game 3-for-9 on the power play.
Greenville took the momentum shift into the third period. The Swamp Rabbits battled and capitalized on an Aleksandr Mikulovich was sent to the penalty box for a 4-minute double minor high-sticking penalty. The team tallied a pair of goals on the power play. The Solar Bears send a puck down the ice to clear the zone and goaltender Ty Rimmer collected it for Sergey Zborovskiy. The rookie blue liner took the puck coast-to-coast to beat the Orlando defense and tally his fourth goal of the season. Zborovskiy slid the puck through the legs of Heeter to cut the lead in half.
The Swamp Rabbits didn’t waste time to tie the game. Just 33 seconds later, Joe Basaraba jammed home a pass from Leedahl and squeezed the shot between the leg of Heeter and the post. Herbert grabbed an assist on the goal that eventually forced overtime.
Late saves from Rimmer were crucial to gaining an extra point. With time winding down in the contest, the fifth-year pro made all eight third period saves on the Solar Bears. The netminder ended the game with 41 saves and his fourth straight win in net.
The top goal scorer on the Swamp Rabbits was the hero in overtime. A faceoff win in the offensive zone won the puck back to Zborovskiy who spun past J.J. Piccinich and left it for Adam Chapie at the top of the slot. The second year pro pulled the puck back away from a sliding Todd Skirving to fire the game-winning goal into the net. Chapie ranks second in the ECHL with eight goals in 11 games.
Special teams played an important roll in the game as five of the seven goals in the game were on the power play. Penalty time put Greenville behind against the Solar Bears in the first period. After an even start in the game, whistles began to offset Greenville’s tempo. Orlando turned 22 shots on net in the first period and grabbed a 2-0 lead on a pair of power play goals.
Todd Skirving turned in a two-goal game and would open the scoring with his first of the season. The rookie was active next to the net after a shot hit the post and he batted in the loose puck at 8:19. Defenseman Nolan Valleau extended the lead with a power play tally. At 15:27 of the first, he launched a quick shot that was blocked by Dawson Leedahl. The puck came right back to the blue line for a second shot that snuck through everyone for his third of the year.
Skirving would net his second goal of the night 1:47 into the second period after winning the faceoff. Another rebound was batted in right atop the crease, but the Solar Bears could not complete the contest. Orlando has yet to earn a win on home ice and are 0-4-2-0 in the last six contests.
Greenville returns to home ice on Wednesday morning for the team’s third morning game of the year. The Swamp Rabbits drop the puck at 10:30 a.m. against the Atlanta Gladiators for the second annual Middle School STEM Day.
