Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (20-24-3-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, recorded two goals in the second period tonight to equalize the game against the Jacksonville Icemen (16-26-3-3). However, the Icemen grabbed a goal in the third period and added an empty net goal to earn a 4-2 win.
The Swamp Rabbits fell behind in the first period on a pair of goals that were contested by the Swamp Rabbits. Cameron Critchlow batted in a rebound after the Swamp Rabbits had killed off a power play to open the scoring at 11:03. Six minutes later the Icemen scored again on a puck that appeared to be kicked into the net by Bobby MacIntyre. Swamp Rabbits goaltender Ty Rimmer made the first save but the rebound came to the moving skate of MacIntyre before touching the back of the net. Greenville’s netminder finished the period with 17 saves on 19 shots and made a game total of 45 stops.
Greenville entered the second period with a 2-0 deficit and tied the game with less than ten minutes played in the frame. Evan Jasper net the Swamp Rabbits first goal on the power play. Defensemen Sergey Zborovskiy and Sean Flanagan moved the puck at the blue line before finding the rookie winger on the right-hand side of the ice. Jasper’s shot just beat goaltender Austin Lotz inside of the post to cut the score in half less than six minutes into the second period. The Swamp Rabbits finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play.
Caleb Herbert netted his 20th goal of the season four minutes later to equalize the game. Shane Walsh and Matt Prapavessis led the leading scorer through neutral ice, where Herbert pushed into the offensive zone. The Bloomington, Minnesota native cut past two Icemen defensemen to tuck in the tying goal on a great individual effort.
Greenville got into penalty trouble in the third period but were stellar on the efforts. The Swamp Rabbits ended the game without a power play goal against on six opportunities. Icemen goalie Austin Lotz made 21 saves on 23 shots to return to the win column.
Jacksonville’s go-ahead goal came with 16 minutes left in the game. With Greenville pushing the pace up the ice, the Icemen moved it the other way on a turnover. A 2-on-0 resulted in a backdoor pass from MacIntyre to Brenden Collier on the right side of the net. He potted the goal and added an empty netter with one second left on the clock to seal the Icemen victory.
The Swamp Rabbits are now 3-5-0-0 against Jacksonville this season with two more games to play on home ice against the Icemen in March. Greenville is off until Tuesday night, continuing a three game stretch of home games at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
