The Greenville Swamp Rabbits proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, and the Wheeling Nailers finish their head to head season series tonight on just the second day of the 2017-18 regular season. The puck drops tonight at 7 p.m. as Greenville seeks a different result against their northern opponent. Tonight is also Underwear Toss night. After the Swamp Rabbits first goal of the game, fans are encouraged to throw new packaged underwear onto the ice as a donation to the Salvation Army of Greenville. All gifts will be distributed locally to the homeless men, women and children in our local community. Before the game, check out the Swamp Rabbits Fan Fest on the Furman Plaza beginning at 5:30 p.m. The celebration includes the Dew Street Hockey Zone, inflatables, concessions specials, music, and more! Be one of the first 750 fans in the building and receive a Swamp Rabbits hand clapper to help make some noise at tonight’s game. GATORADE’S MOST WANTED
Caleb Herbert tallied his first goal with the Swamp Rabbits last night and the first goal of the team’s season. The fourth-year pro from Bloomington, MN sent the water bottle off the net behind Sean Maguire to begin a three-point night. Herbert tied a personal best with his goal and two assists, propelling him to 53 points (34G, 19A) in 71 career ECHL contests. The 6-foot skater is familiar with the Bon Secours Wellness Arena after making his ECHL debut in Greenville on Oct. 30, 2014 while skating with the South Carolina Stingrays.
Forwards Adam Chapie, Curt Gogol, and Branden Troock tallied goals in the game last night. Chapie’s return to Greenville this season was highlighted by a two-point night, while Gogol and Troock each tallied power play goals. Chapie tallied four goals in Greenville last season while Gogol accounted for six goals with the Florida Everblades. Troock split time between the Texas Stars, Tucson Roadrunners and Idaho Steelheads and scored a combined 11 goals in the ECHL and AHL.
FIRE IN THE HOLE!
Greenville and Wheeling turned last night’s game into a shooting gallery, combining for 91 shots on goal in the contest. The shot total was the most seen by both goaltenders Brandon Halverson (44) and Sean Maguire (43). The Swamp Rabbits were only five shots shy of the season high in 2016-17 and six shots away from the franchise record, set in 2013.
THEY’VE GOT THE POWER
Greenville’s power play last season accounted for 40 goals during the regular season. In the opener, the Swamp Rabbits rallied for a pair of power play goals and ended the game 2-for-5 on the man advantage. The Swamp Rabbits were one of three teams to score two power play goals on opening night in addition to the Norfolk Admirals and Indy Fuel.
PUT IT ON THE BOARD
Rookies Dawson Leedahl and Brenden Kotyk each made their pro hockey debut’s last night and recorded assists on Herbert’s opening goal in the first period. Leedahl comes to Greenville out of the Western Hockey League where he earned 190 points (72G, 118A) in 297 games. Kotyk manned the blue line at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and accounted for 23 points (7G, 16A) in 97 games. Of the Swamp Rabbits 16 skaters, five players made their ECHL debut’s and four took their first strides in professional hockey.
- Greenville and Wheeling have met 25 times in team history. The Swamp Rabbits own the head to head 15-8-2.
- In 2016-17, Greenville maintained a 15-9-0-1 record after suffering a loss.
- The Nailers are led by Nick Sorkin in scoring after tallying three points (1G, 2A) last night.
- Branden Troock is three games away from his 150th professional contest, Allan McPherson is four games away from playing his 200th professional contest.
