Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (5-3-1-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, rallied for the third straight game and earned a come-from-behind victory on home ice. The Jacksonville Icemen (0-3-1-0) earned a two-goal lead, but the Swamp Rabbits late game tenacity would eventually translate to a 5-4 win. Greenville recorded three unanswered goals in the second half of the game to take the first of ten games this season against the Icemen.
Carter Sandlak missed the start of the Swamp Rabbits season on injured reserve. The forward rejoined the lineup tonight and made a big impact in the game, tallying the game-winner in the final three minutes of the third period. The power play goal was one of two tallied by Greenville on seven opportunities. Joe Basaraba was the first to score on the man advantage, netting the game’s opening goal 9:48 into the contest. Adam Chapie and Allan McPherson worked the puck to their line mate for a one-timed shot that trickled past the pads of goaltender Jamie Phillips.
Jacksonville would respond with three goals, taking the 3-1 score early in the second period. Bobby Macintyre tallied two of Jacksonville’s goals tonight to earn the third star of the game. Greenville did not succumb to the pressure and battle to score a goal of their own. Jack Nevins rifled a slap shot off the glove of Phillips causing a rebound in the crease. Austin McKay won the mad dash toward the puck and slapped it past the goal line for his second goal this season.
The Icemen regained the advantage on a shorthanded break down the ice that potted Alex Goulet’s fifth of the season with 6:00 left in the second period. Exactly three minutes later, Caleb Herbert grabbed an area pass and walked into the offensive zone. Dancing across the slot, the center ripped a shot into the net to cut into the deficit. At the intermission, the Swamp Rabbits trailed 4-3.
Joe Houk was called for interference at 6:49 of the third period and after the Swamp Rabbits killed off a crucial 4-on-3 and 5-on-4 chance and turned an odd-man rush up the ice. Houk dropped the puck off to McPherson who sent a shot into the net to tie the game. McPherson ended the game with his second four-point night of the week, tallying three assists to go with his third period goal. McPherson leads the ECHL with 16 points (5G, 11A) in nine games.
With less than three minutes to play, Greenville won a set of offensive battles to take back their early lead. Evan Jasper, McPherson, and Sandlak worked hard to gain control of the puck below the goal line. McPherson then sent a pass to Sandlak on the right side of the crease and a quick one-touch shot found the back of the net.
Brandon Halverson put together 31 saves and made some critical stops in the final period to solidify the win. Greenville’s win is the fourth in a row and keeps Jacksonville out of the win column for another night. The Icemen finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play. Phillips suffered his third regulation loss this year, allowing five goals on 26 shots.
The Swamp Rabbits travel to Orlando, Florida to play the next two games against the Solar Bears on Tuesday night and Thursday morning.
