Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, announced today that defenseman Matt Prapavessis has signed back on with his 2016-17 club. The blue-liner began the season in Slovakia, earning seven points (4G, 3A) in 21 games with Nove Zamky. In addition, defenseman Riley Sweeney was released from the Swamp Rabbits roster today.
“Matt was a key piece to our team last season and we are excited to have him back in Greenville,” said Head Coach Brian Gratz. “He is a versatile defenseman and has the ability to step in and play in all situations of the game. Having Matt on the roster adds a high caliber player to our d-core and moves us closer to achieving our goals as a team.”
Prapavessis, 26, returns to Greenville after recording career numbers in the 2016-17 campaign. The North York, Ontario native ranked second among Swamp Rabbits defensemen with 35 points (7G, 28A). Prapavessis was a mainstay for the Swamp Rabbits blue line, playing all but two games last year. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound defenseman recorded five multi-point outings and achieved a career best five-game point streak from February 18 to February 25. Prapavessis also netted a goal and added an assist in the first round of the 2017 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Prior to joining the Swamp Rabbits, the third-year defenseman skated for the Elmira Jackals and the AHL’s Rochester Americans. During his rookie season, Prapavessis played 25 AHL games and earned two points (1G, 1A) for the Americans before being assigned to Elmira for seven games. His first pro point was recorded on April 9, 2015 with Rochester during a 10-game stint after his senior season was completed at Bemidji State University.
Before turning pro, Prapavessis captained his alma mater as a junior and senior and led the Beaver’s in scoring with 24 points (9G, 15A) in 2014-15. For three seasons, he led all Beaver defensemen in scoring and earned 70 points (17G, 53A) in 150 career NCAA games over four years at the university. Prapavessis also suited up for the USHL’s Lincoln Stars in 2010-11, leading the club’s defensemen and ranking fourth among all USHL blue-liners with 34 points (10G, 24A) in 48 games.
Prapavessis and the Swamp Rabbits take the ice against the Atlanta Gladiators on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. The second annual Middle School STEM Day will be the third morning game played by the Swamp Rabbits in three weeks. Greenville won the first two morning contests against Kansas City and in Orlando.
