Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, concluded the seventh season in franchise history earning a playoff berth for the first time since 2014. The Swamp Rabbits captured home ice advantage in the first round of the 2017 Kelly Cup Playoffs by achieving 40 wins for the third time in franchise history and accumulating the third-highest point total since returning to Greenville.

The Swamp Rabbits had 13 players earn promotions to the American Hockey League this season for a total of 24 call ups. Allan McPherson joined the AHL four times, more than any other Greenville skater, with trips to the Utica, Hartford, Texas, and Stockton. In the AHL, Swamp Rabbits alumni combined for 192 appearances across five different teams.
The Swamp Rabbits were among the best teams in overtime this season, collecting a league leading 10 wins in the extra period. Tommy Thompson led the ECHL with four game-winning goals in overtime. Putting the puck on the net was a key factor for Greenville’s offense. The team was 17-4-1-0 when outshooting their opponent. No other team had fewer losses than Greenville in this situation.
Greenville had 35 players don a Swamp Rabbits jersey during the 2016-17 campaign. Of those skaters, 23 posted multi-point efforts this season. Over the course of the team’s 72 games, 144 instances occurred where players tallied at least two points in a contest.

The Swamp Rabbits 2016-17 average attendance was the highest it has been since the team returned to Greenville in 2010. Over the course of 36 home games, more than 142,000 fans cheered the Swamp Rabbits on to 22 victories at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Greenville averaged 3,962 fans per game, ranking 14th in the league this season. On March 10th the Swamp Rabbits also broke the organization’s single-game attendance record with 8,742 fans cheering the team on to a come-from-behind 5-2 victory. The fans also turned out in a big way during the playoffs, breaking the single game attendance record in the postseason. More than 3,800 fans attended Game 5 of the South Division Semifinal series and 3,318 came out for Game 2. Previously the record was set at 3,240 fans on May 24, 2014.
SOME GREAT STREAKS
The Swamp Rabbits had success stringing points and wins together this year. The team’s longest win streak of five games was achieved twice and Greenville went unbeaten in regulation for seven straight games from January 15th to February 1st (5-0-2-0). Brandon Alderson achieved a league high 15-game point streak on the road from October 19th through March 11th. The winger earned 22 points (12G, 10A) during the streak.

The Swamp Rabbits three hat-tricks this season are second-most for a season in franchise history. Michael Joly’s four-goal performance against the Thunder ties a franchise record set by Brendan Connolly on January 11, 2013 against the Orlando Solar Bears. Both were achieved on home ice.

Goaltenders Brandon Halverson and Mackenzie Skapski each recorded shutouts this season. Halverson’s 2-0 victory over Norfolk was his first professional win in just his second start. Skapski tallied a shutout with Greenville for the second consecutive season. The third-year netminder has six shutouts in his pro career between Greenville, Hartford (AHL), and the New York Rangers (NHL). This season, Greenville’s goaltenders combined for the second highest shutout total in franchise history.
